Last week RSP had the pleasure of being joined by Jack Davidson from Plympton Academy for his work experience week.
Jack joined the RSP team from 8 am to 4 pm each day to give him an overview and hands-on experience of all sectors of our business. It was important to us that Jack come away from his week with RSP with some real-world experience and even some useful qualifications which will benefit him in his future career choice.
Monday
Jack joined us for our Monday morning meeting at 8.20, where we set out what we needed to achieve for the week. He had a full induction and was issued PPE. Next on his list of duties was going through the sales and quotation process where he learned to issue a purchase order.
Later in the afternoon, Jack joined us for the project start-up for an actual project we had just won. Jack also completed his slip trip and falls training.
Tuesday
On Tuesday Jack was based with the design team where Scott explained our design process. He also learnt how to produce a Bill of Materials based on the project we started on Monday.
Jack was given guidance on how to use CAD and helped to design the project we started on Monday using CAD software. After a review of what he had learnt, Jack completed the Manual handling training, which will always be useful for anyone working in a workshop environment or who finds themselves needing to handle any heavier items in the workplace.
Wednesday
Today Jack was based in the workshop with Matt and Jeff. He was given training on the hand and power tools he would be using and then assisted Matt & Jeff with building one of the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) cubicles.
Along with some great practical hands-on experience, Jack also had an introduction to the CNC Machine (Computer Numerical Control machine (CNC). This machine uses digitised data to control, automate, and monitor the movements of the CNC.
Then it was time to work on some health and safety tests, where he completed the working at height course. Again, another essential course for working in and around a workshop environment.
Thursday
Jack continued assisting Matt and Jeff in building the DNO cubicle. Jack made a real contribution in helping us complete this cubicle, and we saw Jack’s confidence grow, by asking for more tasks when he completed the one he was assigned. We were very impressed with his enthusiasm.
We also had Jack complete a COSHH Awareness course and Wiring and Crimping Training.
Friday
On Jack’s final day with RSP he assisted Andy Billson in checking the content of the labels for the DNO cubicles he built on Wednesday and Thursday. Jack spotted some errors on the labels, which we got corrected by the label manufacturer.
After his review of the week, Jack went onto the shop floor again to help assist in the wiring of a signalling location case.
Jack has been an asset at RSP during his week with us, he helped with finishing the DNO project, and he completed all of his tasks with real enthusiasm. Whether Jack stays on at college or moves into the workplace, we are sure he will be very successful if he continues and maintains his excellent attitude.
Well done Jack, it was an absolute pleasure having you as part of the RSP team.
Attending work experience not only gives you a feel for your possible future career, but it can also give you the confidence and practical skills you need to succeed in the workplace. Gaining work experience in the field you would like to apply for appreciates or even degrees further down the line could make you a much stronger candidate.
RSP always try to actively support those looking at a career in the rail industry.
